Austin Gastroenterology Partners with Pinnacle to Launch Liver Disease Research Center in Westlake
WHAT:
Austin Gastroenterology has teamed up with Pinnacle Clinical Research to open a first-of its-kind liver disease research center in Central Texas. Austin Gastroenterology is the largest physician group in Central Texas that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases. Pinnacle Clinical Research is dedicated to conducting late phase clinical trials in the areas of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, with a special focus on non alcoholic fatty liver disease. The liver research center will conduct clinical trials on Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is the most common form of chronic liver disease in our country, striking an estimated 80 to 100 million people. It is most prevalent in those over 40 years old who are at risk of heart disease due to obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
NAFLD condition in which fat builds up in your liver. As the name implies, alcohol is not a factor in this type of liver disease. There are two types of NAFLD: simple fatty liver and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Simple fatty liver typically does not cause liver damage but NASH does. NASH is a serious form of the disease that may progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer.
Research participants will receive trial-related procedures, office visits and study medications at no cost.
Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist, Dr. Nadege Gunn will serve as the medical director of the new liver disease research center in Austin.
